I need to find a good dog food that is high in fiber. I was given this dog Science Diet , because that’s what she came with, but she is not eating it, also I have been told by several friends that Science Diet is not really good. So can anyone recommended some good dog foods. Also is it best to give canned or dry? She’s a chihuahua about a year 1/2 . I am dog sitting. My Aunt gave me money to buy her food. Said to get anything ,she’ll eat it if she’s hungry. She said she buys what ever is on sale. But I don’t want to make her sick. Please help,
First off, dogs should always eat the same food, so you should tell your aunt she should stop buying different brands and stick with one high-quality brand.
If you want some high quality food, I’d say you should go buy some in a vet clinic, but you can also find some good brands in a pet shop, just ask the people there and they should be able to give you some advice. Some high quality brands I know: Hill’s Prescription Diet, Royal Canin MediCAL and Purina Veterinary Diet. They usually are high in fiber and you can be sure they will contain highly digestible nutrients and your dog will have a balanced diet. However, these are only sold in vet clinics.
High quality brands are more pricey but not a lot. Since there are more high quality and digestible nutrients in them than in low quality food, you can give your dog smaller quantities of food, so a high quality brand bag lasts longer.
Some dogs can live long, healthy lives eating only cheap brands, while other dogs need high quality food to be healthy. It really depends on the dog.
Remember to make the food change gradually, ideally on at least a 7-days period. Give her 1/4 of the new food and 3/4 of the old one the first three days, 1/2 of each the following three days, and 3/4 of the new and 1/4 of the old the last two days.
As for the canned or dry question, it’s really up to you. Both have advantages and are good for your dog. You could even give her a mix of the two. Dry food is more easily stored, can be left in a bowl for a longer period of time and the nutrients are more concentrated. Canned food contains a lot of water and smells more (so she will be more tempted to eat it). However, it costs more and you have to store every opened can in the refrigerator for a maximum of three days (after that you have to throw it away).

That’s just a little list of some of the healthiest dog foods around. NEVER go for dog foods like Purina, Beneful, Pedigree etc… those are some of the most unhealthiest dog foods.. so i would stay away from those..

Different size dogs have different needs. I feed my former racer greyhound dry kibble called Vets Choice original dry food. They make small-dog kibble, too, called little-bites. Their website is http://www.vetschoice.com for more information. My dog had bald spots when I first rescued him, and now he has a beautiful, soft coat. Or, you might want to buy the smallest bags of kibble intended for small dog breeds until you find a brand she likes. When introducing a new brand of food, mix a little bit with the old brand so as to reduce stomach upset. Also, try putting a little bit of warm water over the kibbles and putting a dab of plain yogurt or a tablespoon of wet dog food on top of the kibble. Fussy eaters might like the smell of wet food, and plain yogurt is good for digestion in dogs. Good luck in your search!
Ok,
Don’t panic. You haven’t said how many days she hasn’t been eating. Sometimes when they get stressed, or have thier routines disrupted, they will change their eating habits.
If you really want to change her diet, look for food that doesn’t have rice or flour listed first in the ingredient list, there’s no protien there.
As small as she is, you could buy canned food or those single serving things and see how she reacts to that, but remember what goes in comes out the other end and it might not be pretty with feeding her wet food.
If she is a normally active dog, try playing with her a little more or walking her. That way she expends energy and will want to eat.
Don’t worry, your Aunt is right, when she gets hungry, she’ll eat I promise!!!!!!
My lab quit eating for like 4 days and it wasn’t until I started walking her again that she would eat. They’re like kids, you can’t make her eat so let her tell you when she’s hungry. She just prbably misses her mom!!!
Don’t feed her Science Diet, Purina, or anything along those lines. You definitely don’t have to buy the food at the vet.. I’ve only known one vet to carry a good dog food. Try to go as grain free as possible. It’s healthier for them and you get less poop :)
