I know I need to look for dry foods that have real meat as the first ingredient, no animal by-products, and no fillers. I’ve also heard that a dog food that is lower in protien and higher in fiber is ideal. What percentages should I be looking for?

I currently feed my dogs Blue Buffalo dog food. A 30lb bag is about $50.00. You get it at the pet store.
1 30lb bag lasts my 3 dogs (70lbs each) about 2 weeks.

Sweetheart, ALL dog food no matter what the brand is bad for dogs.
depends on the breeed, a breed that needs to be grown slowly needs low protein, like 22-24% protein but higher is okay for smaller dogs. low fat is good aswell like 13%
http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/ if you are going to look at kibble. Read around the site, it’s very well put together.
You could alternatively raw feed. All my dogs are raw fed and are healthy.

a "good" kibble has it’s first 4 to 6 ingredients as named meats. High protien can be an issue in old dogs, but in otherwise healthy dogs, it seems to be ok – you can read and research that as well.
I prefer raw whole prey model for my dogs – they are healthy, their teeth are clean, and they don’t smell bad. They LOVE their food, it takes them a while to eat meals that are complex (bones take work, as does the meat around them). My dogs range in age from 8 months, to 15 years. The bottom line, dogs are carnivores, they thrive on a carnivore diet.

Raw food is the best for them
Make sure what you buy is high in protein, not grain-based, and that it’s AAFCO-tested. The AAFCO, the American Association of Feed Control Officials, is a watchdog group that sets food-testing and labeling standards.
lower in protein?? no! dogs need high protein to thrive, whoever told you protein low dog food is better doesn’t have a clue what they are saying. Look for protein percentages of 25-40%
When you look at the ingredients make sure at least the first ingredient is a protein source (chicken, beef) ideally i like the first two ingredients at least to be protein. From there look for whole grains if the food has any. If you spot corn, wheat, or soy in any form look for another brand these are common fillers that also cause allergies in dogs. Also if you see sugar or salt listed its usually to cover the taste of something bad in the food.
The percentages you want depend on the type of dog that you have. An average adult dog thrives on a protein percentage of 25-50%. I feed a grain free diet (Evo) which has more protein, I’ve found my dog is much healthier on a grain free diet and has absolutely no digestive issues which he used to have constantly.
I highly recommend dogfoodanalysis.com to check out different foods and see how they are rated.
