just recently found out he is diabetic, he is on insulin 2x a day and is still fairly active,…The vet sales royal canin at her office and so she recomends it, but i looked into the royal canin vet high fiber brand he gets and it sounds like its not too healthy? any help would be appreciated
I’m not a vet, or any kind of medical professional. However, it is my understanding that when dogs get diabetes, it is a form similar to human type 2, that is, insulin resistance.
All forms of kibble have some kind of starch in them; starch is carb is sugar. The body needs insulin to digest sugar.
Dogs do not naturally eat carbs of any kind; they may snack on grass, or eat fruit when available, but its not a significant part of the wild diet. Why don’t you consider not feeding any kind of kibble, but switching the dog to the raw/prey model diet? You can research it, here:

I especially recommend that you join the yahoogroup "rawfeeding" — there are people on that list who have been feeding diabetic dogs, and other sorts, as well, for years. They can help you out.
I would suggest Natural Balance Limited Ingredients Diet. My Boston Terrier eats that and he has a lot of digestion problems. The ingredients are basically meat and rice (I chose Lamb) and a few other ingredients as preservatives. There wouldn’t be any fruit or carrots, etc. which might be bad for a diabetic dog. Since I started feeding him this, he has not had any episodes of diarrhea or gas problems.
