Find Great Deals on high fiber dog food

Is it safe to put flax seeds or beans in my dog's food to up her fiber intake?

She’s had problems with her anal glands and the vet said to upgrade her food to something high in fiber… but the "high fiber" dog foods don’t have much more fiber in them, and are dramatically expensive. So, is it okay to mix flax seeds or beans into her food?

I’d stay away from flax. Large quantities of beans will probably cause some digestive upset issues. I adopted a dog with only one anal gland, and my vet is fine with mixing in a simple, not-sugary high-fiber cereal like Grape Nuts. If your vet is ok with cereal, be very, very careful that you’re not using a cereal that contains raisins (toxic to dogs.)

Also, I give high-fiber treats like apples or carrots.

My dog also has over-active anal glands. Our vet told us to add pureed pumpkin( PURE, not pumpkin pie mix!!) to his food for the added fiber. Ask your vet for the proper amount for your dog. FOr my 95lb lab mix, we use a couple tablespoons a day. That should me much more effective than flax or beans. It’s inexpensive as well.

Libby’s pure pumpkin is the brand we use.
